The year is MILLENNIUM... by our calendars anyway, the computers did not crash the air planes, or activate nuclear missiles, we are all still here. HURRAY! Time for some good movies then.

(I started out thinking I was going to do a top 10, but then some years were not that good to get a top 10, except 2001, but I'm not there yet...)

Based on the novel by Koushun Takami , and directed by Kinji Fukasak.

Battle Royale takes place in an alternate timeline?Japan is a national socialist state, known as the Republic of Greater East Asia . Under the guise of a "study trip," a group of students from Shiroiwa Junior High School in the fictional town of Shiroiwa (Kagawa Prefecture) are sleep-gassed on a bus. They awaken in the Okishima Island School on Okishima, an isolated, evacuated island southwest of Shodoshima, also in Kagawa Prefecture. They learn that they have been placed in an event called The Program. Officially a military research project, The Program is a means of terrorizing the population, of creating such paranoia as to make organized insurgency impossible. According to the rules, every year since 1947, fifty 3rd year junior high school (14-15 years old) classes are isolated, and each class is required to fight to the death until one student remains. Their movements are restricted by metal collars, later identified as Model Guadalcanal No. 22, around their necks which contain tracking and listening devices; if any student should attempt to escape The Program, or enter declared "danger zones", a bomb will be detonated in the collar, killing the wearer. If no student dies in any 24 hour period, all collars will be detonated simultaneously.

Face Your Deepest Fears... Before They Face You.

No Accidents. No Coincidences. No Escapes. You Can't Cheat Death.

Death Doesn't Take No For An Answer.

Can You Cheat Death?

Death is coming.

I'll see you soon.

Next stop, it's you...

Are you ready to match wits with the Grim Reaper?

From my favourite X-File (and Space Above and Beyond) writers/directors Glen Morgan and James Wong came a movie originally pitched as an episode of the X-FIles. A Supernatural thriller where young Alex is shown the future when he boards a plane to Paris for a school trip.

The opening of this movie is understated, ominous as Alex and his friend Tod prepare for baording and joke around trying to get Tod next to some girl he has the hots for. Then we witness a horrible airplane explosion in the air, and it's all so real until your back in the plane with Alex and the plane has never moved. It was all in his mind. He freaks out, shouting the plane's going to explode and in the process his best friend Tod gets off with i, leaving his brother behind, Carter and his girlfriend Terry are escorted off when Carter (Kerr Smith) trieds to make Alex sit back down, caught up in the middle of it trying to get to his seat is Billy (played to perfection by Seann William Scott) and finally Clear River (really THAT name? Played by a brunette Ali Larter) finds it all so fascinating that she believes Alex's rantings and follows them off. A teacher, who isnt very good at French, Val Lewton (played by Glem Morgan, Kristen Cloke, look out for her in anything these guys make) gets off too, to watch the kids and get a later flight with them.

Back in the departure lounge, they argue butas Alex tries to explain what he saw.

I saw it, I-I don?t know? I saw it, I saw it on the runway, I saw it take off, I saw out my window, I saw the ground a-and the cabin starts to shake a-and the left side blows up and the whole plane explodes, a-and it was so real just like everything happened, you know and then KABOOM!!!! (outside the plane they just got off explodes in the air)

As the movie goes on Alex gets more clues into peoples deaths who cheated death by getting off the plane, but Death has to come back around and finish what it started and make sure the survivors all meet their fates.

The soundtrack CD became a best seller, certified eight times platinum as of October 2007 with sales of 7,421,000 copies in the United States up to November 2008. It won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year, the Grammy Award for Best Country Collaboration with Vocals (for singer Dan Tyminski, whose voice overdubbed George Clooney's in the film on "Man of Constant Sorrow", Nashville songwriter Harley Allen, and the Nashville Bluegrass Band's Pat Enright), and the Grammy Award for Best Male Country Vocal Performance for "O, Death" by Ralph Stanley.

Some of the artists on the soundtrack played a concert at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee, which was recorded in the documentary film, Down from the Mountain.

In 2006, the album ranked #38 on CMT's 40 Greatest Albums in Country Music.

The movie was based on Homer's The Odyssey - "Ulysses Everett McGill, known as Everett (George Clooney), Pete Hogwallop (John Turturro), and Delmar O?Donnell (Tim Blake Nelson) escape from a chain gang and set out to retrieve the $1.2 million in treasure that Everett claims to have stolen from an armored car and buried before his incarceration. They have only four days to find it before the valley in which it is hidden will be flooded to create Arkabutla Lake as part of a new hydroelectric project. Early on in their escape, they try to jump onto a moving train with some hobos, but fall off due to Pete's inability to get on. They then encounter a blind man traveling on a manual railroad car. They hitch a ride, and he foretells their futures, similar to the oracle of Homer's Odyssey."

The film received a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes.

TRUE BLOOD

I really really hope people have caught the start of this on FX. A new series by 'American Beauty's Alan Ball based on The Southern Vampire Mysteries series of novels by Charlaine Harris.

Sookie and Vampire Bill Compton co-exist, in a way not for kids or teenagers to watch.

and what do you all think? If you have seen it.....

When it premired in America it was prefaced with a viral marketing/alternate reality game (ARG) campaign, based at BloodCopy.com. This included setting up multiple websites, encoding web address into unmarked envelopes mailed to high profile blog writers and others, and even performances by a "vampire" who attempted to reach out to others of their kind, to discuss the recent creation of "TruBlood", a fictional beverage which is featured in the show.

A MySpace account with the username "Blood" had, as of June 19, uploaded two videos;one entitled "Vampire Taste Test - Tru Blood vs Human", and one called "BloodCopy Exclusive INTERVIEW WITH SAMSON THE VAMPIRE".

A prequel comic was handed out to attendees of the 2008 Comic-Con. The comic centers around an old vampire named Lamar, who tells the reader about how TruBlood surfaced and was discussed between many vampires before going public. At one point, Lamar wonders if TruBlood is making the world safe for vampires or from them.

Several commercials featured on HBO and Facebook.com aired prior to the series premiere, placing vampires in ads similar to those of beer and wine. Some beverage vending machines across the US were also fitted with cards indicating that they were "sold out" of TruBlood.

Thousands of DVDs of the first episode were handed out to attendees of Midnight Madness, a special screenings event of the 2008 Toronto International Film Festival.

Blockbuster Video provided free rental of the first episode of True Blood several days before it was broadcast on HBO. The video had a faint promotional watermark throughout the episode.

On April 16, 2009, HBO released the first teaser poster for Season 2. The image uses a perspective technique that shows observers one of two images.

A minute-long promotional video advertising season two, which featured Bob Dylan's "Beyond Here Lies Nothin'," was released via Entertainment Tonight in early May.

Personally I wish Twilight didn't exist, and that this could get the spotlight instead, its dark, campy funny in parts... the way you end up laughing at parts and go "oooh I don't think I should laugh"

Are there fans of Alan Ball out there, anyone see his previous show 'Six Feet Under'?

I love the title sequence, almost as much as I still love the 'Six Feet Under' sequence, which well coincidence? No. True Blood's title sequence was created by Digital Kitchen, a production studio that was also responsible for creating the title sequence of Six Feet Under. The sequence, which is primarily composed of portrayals of the show's deep South setting, is played to "Bad Things" by Jace Everett

I watched this over two days, life getting in the way, but I suppose this sort of film (Anthology) lends itself to be able to do that.

Tagline - Acclaimed as "THE FEAR OF THE YEAR"

Dr. Terror's House of Horrors is not set in a house, the house refers to a deck of Tarot cards carried by a strange fortune teller when five strangers share a carriage on a train.

It stars Christopher Lee, Michael Gough, Peter Cushing, Donald Sutherland and Roy Castle who are told one by one their futures.... each leading to death. (which come on really, all our futures lead to death.)

Now a while or so ago, in class we viewed the 'Voodoo' segment of the movie, where Biff Bailey as part of a music jazz group is asked to go to the West Indies, he is thrilled!

He thinks theres a summer of fun and girls ahead as he says in an Indian accent - "We are goin' to de West Indies!" Yes this is supposed to show how ignorant he is, and lead us to follow this unaware man into territories he has no idea or understanding of their culture.

So off they go to play the West Indies for the summer, while there he comes across haunting music, which he copies down and hopes to make into a big record. But the music is of some Voodo God who is a "jealous God" he is told by the people there, and that if he plays the music, wherever he is the God will send someone to kill him, and get justice.

Biff goes home and plays the music in a nightclub he works in. Ignorance is bliss, until a gusty gale destroys the club. Bad times. Biff (I almost wrote Bill Bailey there) trottes off home, sorry to the club owner but not that freighted, silly silly man. Well you know where this is going, he is paranoid all the way home, bad things happen to him and yep he is confronted with an Voodoo tribesman in his apartment, and death ensues. Bad times.

The other stories include a plant coming to life, Christopher Lee as an art critic being followed by a man who makes paper chain people... yeah...., there's werewolf dog things and vampires too. YAY

You can start to watch it here -

So who is this mysterious stranger with his house of horrors tarot deck -

Death

 Comments

Crossing Over (2009)

Within the first 20mins of the movie, the web of characters is placed in one after another.... If this was a tv show, it would be a
sketch show...

Whereas 'Crash' (2004) as a television show was really good 'Crash' (2008)

but wait they will connect...right?

Harrison Ford being huffy about taking out some clothing factor workers

Lizzie Caplan in a Jewish school singing with an Atheist

A Young girl with Ashley Judd, with nobody to adopt her. Sad Times.

Then a girl in High School... the other teens shout abuse at her while she reads a paper on Terroris. Bad Times.

the intro to characters went on a bit more and i got bored..... then Harrison showed back up, I had faith... .til he went away and we moved onto another character straight away..... I should be watching Crash instead...

The film at around 2 hours long, took me all night to watch... and not only for a noisy family and other more interesting things going on....

Ray Liotta shows up, I like him.... I'm back to a plus... until he sexmails a cute Aussie for a greencard. REALLY BAD TIMES!

I'm getting into it by now, then we switch again. So we are going to be told various peoples stories to do with immigration in america, based on their ethnicity and religion.

Got it... okay. Let me continue. (sw)

The young girl is busted in on in her home by the FBI, because of her class paper. Now this I have seen happening on documentaries, I think there was a Louis Theroux documentary on it where he went to a retirement villiage and an old vetiran was investigated by the FBI because the old fella had made a comment to a neighbour about the war, the FBI bothered investigating this old fella for terrorist activities.... really? This isnt where their talents should be focused... and I don't mean they should be investigating Aliens instead.

The poor girl is threatened with her whole family being deported because of what she wrote in a class paper on 9/11. Instead she is in a detainment centre and about to be deported by herself, really sad and bad times. Really depressing to watch.

As depressing as that was, Ray's character falling for the nice Aussie actreses was as disturbing.

It took til almost an hour in till I was sucked into the movie.

We almost end on several characters being in the citizenship ceremony, with big flag and national anthem being belted out

We see three of the females leaving the USA at the end,

and one little girl getting her home (adopted by Ray Liotta's wife.... or probably ex-wife now)

I liked how the stories eventually mingled and crossed, but not until the last few scenes. I wasnt happy it was a disjointed tale when it started out, seemingly connected by theme rather than character. The diffrences of the characters were not really diffrences after all, they are going through similar situations....

Short review as its all this deserves tbh.
I know these 3 movies are "poopy shit" but i really enjoyed Boogeyman 2 (then this one and the first one last...) makes some sense to me. Yeah this is a bad movie imo. (sw)

College kids (one is the daughter of Tobins character from the second movie, well at least i think she was) and she now believes in the Boogeyman and her friends (mostly) dont... so they go in their closets to "check it out" and "disprove" what she (and Candice from Corrie) believe.

Yeah... FUN! (not) and so they get killed in boring ways (except the Bong, that was passable)

Just do not bother with this (unless you, like me, have OCD and have seen the other 2 so have to see this one to complete the movies)

Wow that review was longer than I was expecting it to be... Anywhos.. Anyone unfortunate enough to HAVE seen this?

 Comments

Review - The Wrestler (2008)

So its already in the IMDB Top 250 (currently at 57)....

If you know anything about Jake 'the snake' Robberts and have seen 'Beyond the Mat' then you've already seen this movie.

But if you aint, then it IS a good movie, sad, pathetic and makes me just feel depressed.

But... the effect Jake Roberts in Beyond the Mat had on me was profound, his whole life was utter depressing, and it was so sad beyond belief to see this once GREAT Headliner reduced to wrestling the smallest, crappiest shows and destroying himself behind the scenes with drugs, alcohol and sex that destroyed every relationship he ever had (even the one with his daughter)

Now go watch 'The Wrestler' and tell me that aint familiar.

(Yep even the characters name is a play on Jake 'The Snake' Roberts isnt it? Randy 'The Ram' Robinson)

Story aside, Mickey "OH MY GOD WHATS HAPPENED TO HIS FACE" Rouke, turns in a great performance which makes this movie what it is.

The writing is unoriginal as is the story and well all that because I feel someone watched 'Beyond the Mat' and red-did the Jake Roberts segments of that Documentary, but the movie IS good, but not Top 250 good.

I'd love to hear off anyone else who has seen 'Beyond the Mat'...

 Comments

My Name Is Bruce

My Name Is Bruce

First off I didnt LOVE it... I did like it.

Again i'll chalk it up to hype on my behalf, I love Bruce Campbell and the Evil Dead series (and comics etc) so anything I coulda dreamt up wasnt going to be the movie. That said... it is a good movie. THAT said, its coming from a Bruce Campbell fan perspective so I dont know if anyone else will enjoy it. Its certainly PURE Bruce and witty, with the lovely Ted Raimi shemping it up quite a bit.

Its certainly no Evil Dead (but how could it be to me)

Certainly watch it if your a Bruce fan (which i'll guess you were or have already) but to the casual movie viewer, go watch the Evil Dead movies first... THEN watch this...

 Comments

Repo! the Genetic Opera

For those who do not know, Repo! is a horror rock opera by Darren Lynn Bousman (of the Saw series).

Briefly, it is set in the future where everyone has tried to achieve genetic perfection "its whats on the inside that counts" but people are in debt, so the Repo man comes to reclaim the companys property, and in the proess kills you to get the spin, the liver the whatever you owe back (and sings about it whilst doing so).

Its bloody certainly but the songs are headbangers and it is truley a dark comedy. Don't let Paris Hilton put you off if your one of those people who dont like her, she certainly does not take herself serious in this role, and neither should you.

Tony Head is fabulous as the Repo man, and certainly has a set of pipes on him (as we know from OMWF and RHPS).

Personally I loved Bill Moseley as Luigi (one of 3 children trying to stake claim to GeneCo once their father is to pass away).

Please seek this movie out and rock out to it!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0963194/

I got to thinking about this again, why did I bother thinking about this again? Okay but I did...

Here's what I would have like to have seen... the Earth SNUFFS it...

Harsh?

Well we didnt even see a President in it and instead the president put the worlds hands in Kathy "hobblin" Bates, Im not sure what sort of move that was. Did they think the current US President is a joke so they couldnt put him in, or are they trying to keep this out of time so didnt even go for a generic president, or is it something to do with the US president being a puppet for others and so the conspiracy theories begin?

That might have been a wake up call instead of Cleese begging for us to have yet ANOTHER chance to save the planet...

I might change my opinion a third time on this movie if i ever watch it again, but with Jen Connelly being in it IS actually likely to happen.
