Writers Blockage... a big ole wall!!

by the_real_linda @ Thursday, Jun. 21, 2007 - 20:31:04

Well yesterday I had writers block, and the day before that, and that and that.  You see I’d just finished a story, a tall tale which totally took it out of me to write. It was meant to be a stupid folly, something silly but it got so serious and truthful. (Still a tad ridiculous I suppose) So I got some good advice off Rod... HUGE THANKS!!! (Because it worked.)

He said-

“When I'm stuck. Like, really, really stuck I go back to the same technique. It's called "morning pages."

When you wake up tomorrow, grab a pad and pen and write, by hand for three pages. It doesn't matter what you write. You can write "I hate doing this. this exercise sucks" over and over. After about a page of nothingness, something miraculous happens...ideas start coming out. DO NOT STOP TO CONTEMPLATE THE IDEAS! JUST KEEP WRITING!

Finish the three pages every morning and after a week, you'll be creatively recharged. I learned this technique from a book called "The Artist's Way" that my acting teacher gave me, but it works to spur creativity in every capacity.

Good luck.”

So before I went to sleep I placed a black notepad (my purple one got full with the last one I wrote) on the window sill and a pen, I woke up and thought to myself that I gotta give this a go, It started out like a diary entry and half way the 2nd page my next story that take place before the last one flooded out of me. I had the idea for it from one line one of my characters says in the other story, she alludes to an event but no information is given and I wanted to go back and explore this time in my 2 main characters life’s. So now I got the new story, it was stuck in their but somehow couldn’t come out until I free-wrote.

The other story came outta me and I wrote it all in a notebook, I mean I couldn’t write fast enough you know what I mean when it’s not you writing but something else is using you to write through? I mean I carried this note book everywhere and now it has stuff written in by other people, other people’s drunken ramblings, but even in a bar I had to write. Alcohol usually helps me write actually, I'm more truthful, and as long as I don't go too far so I can’t read it in the morning... as has happened before while writing lyrics.

Pez of the day says-

“Please no sequel! Seriously the first one wasn’t that good... concentrate on making ‘Shrek the Halls’ or the puss in boots spin-off that I hope never happens.”

I love your idea about the writing three pages... even if it's not your own. I'm going to give it a try, perhaps it will improve my acting too.

Yeah gotta share the good ideas, Id heard writers say that they'd always have to write cause if they stop then it could stop forever... so writing a random 2 pages every morning could just keep you ticking over. Plus if you've just woken up your not thinking properly yet and are somehow still connected to your dreams so your ideas could be more imaganative, just a thought or two, lol.

Thats a good idea. Not heard it before, thanks for sharing.

I can just wait to write when it hits me as the Rabbits story on my other blog is just a bit of fun. I just do that whenever I can think of something.

That is sage advice, indeed. I hate writer's block, but even worse is artist's block, particularly when your hobby is webcomics.

Thanks for the invite, I'll accept because you seem to be alright. Just don't go proving me wrong! :DD

I luff yer pez there. Just write when inspiration hits and jot it down. Let the words flow from you and place them on paper. Bless

I've been writing Morning Pages for years = inspiration, connection to Source/God/All That Is/Universe :)

I've noticed for me that even tho writing first thing gets ideas flowing, writing the actual body of text or script, i find writing in the middle of the night works best for me. I'm more honest and my guard is down at night so more truth goes into my work. (I've got to go back through it through the daytime to correct mistakes tho, lol, with me being tired when i write)
